Singaporeans, Discounts, and Money @ 4:02 PM

I went to the shoe shop today to buy new shoes, and I came upon an interesting phenomenon. Or rather, one that is seen almost everywhere on this sunny island. As I was queuing to pay for my purchase, an auntie in front of me requested for a discount for her purchases. She bought quite a lot of shoes and seemed to think it was only reasonable to ask for a discount for her purchases. The store owner declined to give a discount and the auntie’s face became quite annoyed, though of course, she didn’t mouth her displeasure aloud. It would have been embarrassing and awkward; there were quite a number of customers in the store at that time.

The above incident led to another event earlier this month. My sis and I went to the same shop to buy shoes and the person in charge gave my sis a discount for her shoes. Interestingly, there were only the two of us in that shop at the time.

Double standards; that’s what came to mind as I recalled the two separate incidents. The store owner, in my humble opinion, is only willing to give discounts when there aren’t that many people in the shop. Think about it, if the owner offers a discount to one particular customer in the shop, the others would start to ask for discounts too. By then, the shop owner would have suffered quite a loss. Wouldn’t it? That’s how realistic we are. Money and money woes seems to be a common headache for all. Complains are often heard about how money is never sufficient to survive in this society. Many families as a result, have both parents, and even children, working to handle the monthly household expenses. At least, my family seems that way. I’m not entirely sure about others.

Discounts…money….discounts….money….sigh~
